PRESENT CONTINUOUS FORM
PRESENT CONTINUOUS FORM
How to make the Present Continuous Tense
(also called the Present Progressive Tense)
Level: beginner
The present continuous is made from the present tense of the verb be and the –ing form of a verb:
We use the present continuous to talk about:
- activities at the moment of speaking
- future plans or arrangements
Here is how we make the positive:
Subject | Auxiliary | Verb (present participle) | |
---|---|---|---|
I | am | sleeping | in the garden. |
He/She/It | is | ||
You We You They | are |
We can make the negative by adding 'not':
Subject | Auxiliary | not | Verb (present participle) | |
---|---|---|---|---|
I | am | not | sleeping | in the garden. |
He/She/It | is | |||
You We You They | are |
Questions are also really, really easy. Just like we made the question with 'be' in the present simple, here we also put 'am', 'is', or 'are' before the subject to make a 'yes / no' question:
Yes / No Questions |
am I eating chocolate ? |
are you studying now ? |
is he working ? |
is she doing her homework ? |
is it raining ? |
are we meeting at six ? |
are they coming ? |
(Question word) | Auxiliary | Subject | Verb (present participle) ? |
---|---|---|---|
(Where) | am | I | sleeping? |
is | he/she/it | ||
are | you we you they |
